UU 101: Unitarian Universalist Beliefs and History

Sunday, May 28 at 11:30 a.m. in The Friarplace

UU 101 is the first of two classes about Unitarian Universalism and EUUC. UU 101 & 102 are required classes for folks who wish to join our congregation, and we find they help newcomers make an informed decision about whether Unitarian Universalism and EUUC are the right fit for them. Lunch is served and childcare is available with advance notice. You can sign up online, by calling the church office, or by contacting Nancy Gladow or Lynn Carpenter.

Advocates for Women Retreat

Saturday, June 3 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. offsite

The Advocates are taking stock of the issues facing women here and abroad, to help guide our efforts. At our retreat, we also will discuss how to best work together to accomplish our goals. If you would like to attend but have not signed up yet, or simply want more information about the Advocates, please contact us here.

Volunteer Recognition

Sunday, June 4 after the service in the Narthex

We are blessed with an abundance of dedicated volunteers and we will honor them on June 4 after the service with a cake reception during coffee hour. If you have sung or played music, taught our children or advised our youth, made coffee, ushered, welcomed, greeted, or done sound, gardened, cleaned, served on a committee or team, cared for our libraries or bookstore, worked on the Art Show, Rummage Sale or Auction, or in any other way cared for our community, this cake's for you! Join us to celebrate our shared ministry.

Announcements

Neighbors in Need

EUUC will not be providing brunch for Neighbors in Need in May, however we will be providing brunch for them in June.

Mark your calendars now for the Pacific Western Region's Assembly - April 27 to 29 2018

The Pacific Western Region will hold a regional assembly in 2018 on April 27-29 at the DoubleTree Hotel in Portland, Oregon.

This will be our region's second regional assembly. The first was held four years ago in San Jose, California, in April 2013. This regional assembly will take the place of an annual district assembly for each of the four districts, though each of the four districts will likely hold a separate business meeting in Portland.

Host a Summer Potluck

Potlucks to be held mid-July through August

Would you like to host a potluck to welcome newcomers to our congregation anytime from mid-July through August? A summer potluck allows the party to spill out into the garden. Or you might want to host it in a park. Your job will be to provide a main dish, coordinate the food others bring and provide a place to gather. The group will include some seasoned members as well as newcomers. Does anyone want to host a potluck at your home or in a park for families with children? Cyndy Norman will handle sign ups and give you your list of guests. You are guaranteed interesting conversation and fun. Please contact Cyndy if you are interested.

EUUC Garden is starting

Every Monday at 9:00 a.m. at the garden

The EUUC garden is ready for planting!  We welcome anyone who is interested in gardening with us.  From now on until the garden is put to bed for winter, we will be meeting every Monday at 9:00 am.  Bring your gardening tools and gloves and wear your gardening clothes and join us.

Annual UUA General Assembly

The Annual General Assembly for the UUA takes place June 21–25, 2017 in New Orleans. The theme this year is Resist and Rejoice! This is also a Justice General Assembly year and there is a 2 day workshop preceding General Assembly entitled “Undoing Racism” on Tuesday, June 20 and Wednesday, June 21. This is one of the best workshops available on this critical topic and is a good reason to attend General Assembly this year. This year's General Assembly will include the annual Ware Lecture from award-winning author and lawyer, Bryan Stephenson. He is the founder and Executive Director of the Equal Justice Initiative in Montgomery, Alabama and the author of the critically acclaimed New York Times bestseller, Just Mercy.

Sunday coffee/tea servers

Social Justice Reading Circle for June:  Bryan Stevenson's "Just Mercy"

This #1 New York Times Bestseller is Stevenson’s story of working as a young lawyer with the poor and wrongly condemned. Reviewer David Cole writes: “Every bit as moving as To Kill a Mockingbird, and in some ways more so . . . a searing indictment of American criminal justice and a stirring testament to the salvation that fighting for the vulnerable sometimes yields.” Discussion: Sunday, June 11, at 12:30 pm, led by Vicki Roberts-Gassler. To register email sjrc.rsvp@euuc.org or signup at the SJ bulletin board. A limited number of copies are available on loan at the Social Justice Desk.
