Gatherings and events

"A Fresh Look at the Navel:  Reflections on Nourishment and Hunger"

Sunday, July 30 at 10 a.m. in Chapman Hall

The term “navel-gazing” is often uttered with disparagement.  But perhaps there’s more to the navel than meets the eye.  Today, we explore the difference between narcissism and self-love, and the importance of the latter to everything we do.

The Reverend Emily Melcher is a Unitarian Universalist Accredited Interim Minister. She has served congregations in Vermont, Connecticut and Washington. She lives in Olympia, WA, where she is currently enjoying a gap year between ministries and pursuing a Doctorate of Ministry in Spiritual Renewal, Contemplative Practice, and Strategic Leadership at Claremont School of Theology. A singer and songwriter, Emily has 4 CDs, which are available gratis after the service, or on request for the cost of postage and handling.

Bystander Intervention Training

Saturday, August 12 from 1 to 3 p.m. Eastshore Unitarian Universalist Church in Bellevue

Considering the likelihood that any of us may observe an incident wherein someone is mistreated, abused or harassed by another, the need for this training may be stronger than ever. Goals for this training include: raising awareness of helping behaviors, increasing one's motivation to help, developing skills and confidence when responding to problems or concerns, and ensuring the safety and well-being of self and others. Please sign up for this workshop at the Social Justice desk.

The SJ Reading Circle for August: J.D. Vance's Hillbilly Elegy

Sunday, August 20 at 11:30 a.m. in Room 5

Hillbilly Elegy is a #1 New York Times Bestseller. It was named by the Times as one of "6 books to help understand Trump's win." From the book's cover: "Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of poor, white Americans. The disintegration of this group, a process that has been slowly occurring now for over forty years, has been reported with growing frequency and alarm, but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside." The discussion will be led by Vicki Roberts-Gassler. To register, email sjrc.rsvp@euuc.org or sign up at the Social Justice bulletin board.

New time for early service starting on Ingathering on September 10

Faith Development classes move to the early service time (9 a.m., including the Youth Group) on September 10 (Toddler Care available at both services)

After much discernment and discussion, the Board of Trustees has approved moving the Faith Development Classes, including the Youth Group, to the early service starting with Ingathering Sunday, September 10.  Toddler Care will still be available at both services. In order to ease the strain on the parking lot, and cause less confusion about our start times, the early service will start at 9 a.m. The late service will follow at 11 a.m.

Arms Around contact for August

Sunday Offering Committee welcomes nominations

The committee is particularly interested in supporting groups that are not receiving large grant or foundation donations and for whom our contribution can make a difference. Nomination forms can be found online at the EUUC website or in the Sunday Offering mailbox. Completed forms may be put in the mailbox prior to the Sunday Offering’s next meeting, which will be Monday, August 7 in Room 5 at 7:00 p.m. All are welcome.
