Hello good people! (who have expressed interest in racial justice work at EUUC)

The Racial Justice Workgroup at EUUC is interested in meeting with you to dive into what we’re doing at EUUC about racial justice inside and outside our doors.  We’re currently in the process of finding a date for this meeting.  The workgroup was organized as a temporary team to kick-start EUUC’s racial justice focus.  As part of this larger-group organizing process, the workgroup will transition to being a sub-committee of Peace & Justice.

In the meantime, EUUC’s calendar is full of important events that can increase our grounding in racial justice issues.  Here’s a list of dates to calendar – additional information is included below.

Friday, September 29 – Cecilia’s installation, with guest minister Marlin Lavanhar.
Saturday, October 7 – NW UU Justice Summit with EUUC’s Cecilia Kingman and Carlo Voli,   and anti-racist activist Leslie Schmidt.
Sunday, October 8 – Screening of the movie 13th (about the 13th Amendment).
Monday, November 7 –  Mass Meeting for the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival with Rev. Dr. William Barber.

In addition, there are two upcoming Sunday services focused on racial justice, one with a nationally known UU theologian.

October 22.  Cecilia will preach on intersectionality – the concept that oppressive institutions (racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, xenophobia, classism, etc.) are interconnected and cannot be examined separately.

October 29.  The preacher will be Rev. Dr. Rosemary Bray McNatt, President of Starr King School for the Ministry. Rev. Dr. McNatt is one of our most prominent UU theologians, and a major African American voice in our faith.

Here are the event details:

Cecilia’s Installation – This Friday September 29, 7-8:30pm with reception following.
This event will be held at Edmonds United Methodist (happening there because we needed a larger venue to hold everyone and everything going on!). Plan to arrive by 6:45. Childcare will be provided and children are welcome.

Not only is it wildly exciting and important to be present at the installation of our new minister for Faith and Justice, but the preacher of the sermon that evening is Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister at All Souls Unitarian Church, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. All Souls is a multi-racial church of over two thousand members and a key player in racial reconciliation work in Tulsa. Rev. Dr. Lavanhar will preach about his congregation's work for racial justice.

NW UU Justice Summit:  “Called to Action” – Saturday, October 7, 8:45am to 5pm at University Unitarian Church, Seattle.
Our own Carlo Voli and Rev. Cecilia Kingman, along with anti-racist activist Leslie Schmidt will speak about what it can mean to be called to action. You’ll get to meet in issue groups of your choice. You will connect with other UU’s in our area working on the same issues to build connection and collaboration.  For more information, including how to register, visit EUUC’s website and follow the link from the homepage, or email socialjustice.rsvp@euuc.org.

Screening of the movie 13th – Sunday, October 8, 12:30pm at EUUC.
This powerful documentary explores the role of the 13th Amendment in mass incarceration. It is described by the New York Times as a “ stirring treatise on the prison industrial complex through a nexus of racism, capitalism, policies, and politics.”  Childcare and a light lunch will be provided.  Run time: 1 hour, 40min.  To RVSP, email  racialjustice.rsvp@euuc.org. Be sure to mention the name of the event and whether or not you need childcare.

Mass Meeting for the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival with Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II and Rev. Dr. Liz Theoharis  –  Monday, November 6, 7 to 9pm, Intellectual House--the Native Life & Tribal Relations Longhouse at the University of Washington, 4249 Whitman Ct. Seattle, WA.

Rev. Dr. Barber, author of The Third Reconstruction: How a Moral Movement is Overcoming the Politics of Division and Fear is a nationally known black minister and a powerful voice for racial equality. EUUC is a major sponsor of this event.

That’s all for now!  If you have any questions, please email racialjustice.rsvp@euuc.org.

With love and gratitude for all you do,

The (temporary) Racial Justice Workgroup: Ginger Alonzo, Craig Cyr, Kyle Gillis, Pam Iverson, Rachel Maxwell, Maria Thompson, Carolyn Tucker
