Social Justice News

Edmonds Unitarian Universalist Congregation

March 14, 2017

Welcome to the all-new EUUC Social Justice Newsletter.  We are still discussing the details for how this list will be used, but there are too many important events coming up to wait until all of these details have been decided.

If you have questions about any of these events, please email socialjustice.rsvp@euuc.org.

EUUC EVENTS

Solidarity with EUUC Member, Clara Cleve, March 16

During a BreakFree event last May, Clara Cleve was arrested for protesting against dependence on fossil fuels and pipelines. Her trial will be this Thursday in the Superior Court building across the street from the district court in Mount Vernon.  It is helpful to fill the room with supporters!

Carpools will be leaving from EUUC at 9:30. For drivers, here’s the address: Skagit County District Court, Larry E Moller Public Safety Bldg, 600 S Third, Mount Vernon.

Change the Course (of Global Warming) Workshop – Registration deadline March 15.
Event - March 18 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at EUUC

If you’re worried about the course of global warming and setbacks from this administration, come to this workshop! We find hope in community. We will engage all your senses in this active and creative day. An artist will draw our thoughts as we move from envisioning the future we want, to identifying what is keeping it from happening, and then tearing down those barriers to find our paths forward. Register now by emailing

socialjustice.rsvp(_AT_)euuc.org
, and invite your friends and neighbors. $10 includes lunch.

EUUC Congregational Meeting, March 26

Following the second service, there will be a Congregational Meetings to vote on calling Cecilia Kingman to be EUUC’s first ever Minister of Faith and Justice.  In this capacity, Cecilia will be able to apply her passion for social justice work and years of ministerial experience to supporting EUUC’s social justice program and nurturing our resilience. A quorum on 40%, or 116 votes, will be needed before a vote can be taken.  If you are an EUUC member, please plan to participate in this very important opportunity to increase our ability to help others and advance our UU values.

Social Justice Reading Circle for May: “The Third Reconstruction: How a Moral Movement is Overcoming the Politics of Division and Fear”  by The Reverend Dr. William J. Barber II

This group will be led by Rachel Maxwell.  Information on dates, times, and how to register will be available soon.

IN THE COMMUNITY

Message from FairVote of Washington

Meeting Monday, Mar 27, 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM, Wedgewood Presbyterian Church (35th Ave NE, Seattle)  Website:  http://fairvotewa.org/

Our electoral system is broken. We have an archaic Electoral College system. Gerrymandering manipulates this system. Interstate crosscheck throws legitimate voters off the polls. Electronic voting machines do little to close vulnerabilities. And the two party system limits real choices people demand. If you live in or near Seattle, attend this meeting to see what's being done to correct the system and how you can help.

At FairVote Washington's 4th monthly meeting in Seattle we welcome special guests Rob Richie & Cynthia Terrell of FairVote National! Come hear about successful electoral reform efforts all across the country, and learn how we can apply those lessons here in Washington!

FairVote is:
  - a national, non-partisan, 501(c)(3)h non-profit organization that “seeks to make democracy fair, functional, and more representative”.
  - a separate organization that works in alliance with FairVote as part of network of state-based organizations to promote voting reform across the country.
  - a non-partisan, grassroots group. We support specific initiatives such as Proportional Representation, Ranked Choice Voting, and the National Popular Vote.
