Message from the Peace and Justice Committee

There are two important opportunities for involvement and support of progressive causes coming up.

The retrail of Ken Ward will start on Monday, June 5.  Ken was one for five climate activists who closed valves on major oil pipelines on October 11 of last year. In his first trail, Ward used the "necessity defense" arguing that the climate-change crisis made lawbreaking necessary.  The argument was convincing enough that the trail ended in a hung jury.  The District Attorney has decided to retry the case.  A strong showing of support for Ken was thought to have played a vital role in the previous outcome, so it is hoped that supporters can fill the courtroom. The first day will be jury selection, so Tuesday, June 6 is the best day to be in the courtroom.    If you would like to go, contact Gayle Leberg at socialjustice.rsvp@euuc.org and we will arrange carpooling.

The other opportunity is on Sunday, June 4, at noon. The North Sound Progressive Summit is taking place at the Snohomish County Courthouse Plaza in Everett.  Many local progressive groups will be on hand.  It is a good opportunity to wear your Standing on the Side of Love shirt and network with others that share our values.  There will be live music, tables, speakers and a march.

From their Facebook page:

"Kick-off the Summer of Resistance with local progressive grassroots organizations and advocates, speakers and entertainment. At the Snohomish County Courthouse Plaza and Amphitheater, in downtown Everett, the Summit will be followed by the “March for Solidarity!”

We’re building a coalition of progressive groups in SnoCo - shaping democracy by participation! You are invited to explore local opportunities to join in creating progressive social change. Local grassroots groups will be sharing information and conversation. Sign-up to join a Rapid Response Progressive Community People’s Posse, at the Summit Booth! IN THE EVENT OF RAIN WE GO INDOORS!

The Summit will culminate at 2 p.m. when you are invited to join the March in Solidarity with Immigrants and Refugees, from the Plaza on an easy family-friendly route. Bring any positive message signs and Let’s March!

~ NO FORCE IS GREATER THAN PEOPLE COMING TOGETHER IN UNITY ~"
