Gatherings and events

Advocates for Women Retreat

Saturday, June 3 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. offsite

The Advocates are taking stock of the issues facing women here and abroad, to help guide our efforts. At our retreat, we also will discuss how to best work together to accomplish our goals. If you would like to attend but have not signed up yet, or simply want more information about the Advocates, please contact us here.

Volunteer Recognition

Sunday, June 4 after the service in the Narthex

We are blessed with an abundance of dedicated volunteers and we will honor them on June 4 after the service with a cake reception during coffee hour. If you have sung or played music, taught our children or advised our youth, made coffee, ushered, welcomed, greeted, or done sound, gardened, cleaned, served on a committee or team, cared for our libraries or bookstore, worked on the Art Show, Rummage Sale or Auction, or in any other way cared for our community, this cake's for you! Join us to celebrate our shared ministry.

Women's Circle

Thursday, June 8 at 7 p.m. in Room 6

You are invited to join the open women's circle which meets on the second Thursday of each month. This circle is an opportunity to join with other women in mutual sharing of ourselves around topics that nourish our spirits. It is ongoing and open to both newcomers and longtime members. You are welcome to come and see if this group is right for you. If it is a good fit, please join us as a regular member of the group. For more information please contact Carol Peters or Gail Smith.

Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Invites EUUC to Iftar Dinner

Saturday, June 10 at 7:30 p.m. meet in the EUUC parking lot to carpool to Monroe

Ramadan began on May 26 and continues to June 24. Our friends at the Abode of Kindness Mosque have invited us to break their fast with them on Saturdays. On June 10, we will join with the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community at their Mosque for a Q&A at 8:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 9:30 p.m. This is a wonderful way to connect again with this Muslim Community and to “Build Solidarity with our Muslim Neighbors”. To sign up, go to Board.rsvp@euuc.org.

Summer Solstice Celebration

Friday, June 19 at 7 p.m. in Chapman Hall

The sun is at the midpoint of its journey across the sky. Days are long and nights are short. Join the EUUC Wheel of the Year Pagan Circle in celebrating the Summer Solstice. Weather permitting, part of the ritual will be held out doors. The celebration combines Wiccan, Shamanic, traditional folklore and Unitarian Universalist traditions. All are welcome. Children are especially welcome. Please bring drums, bells, rattles and sacred items to put on the altar. For more information, contact JoDee Creighton.

Announcements

Sunday Offering recipient for June

The Sunday Offering for the month of June will be given to the Khayelisha Care Project, nominated by EUUC member Pam Iverson, who served as a Peace Corps volunteer with the project in South Africa for the past two years. This nonprofit organization serves orphaned and vulnerable children who have been impacted by the high rate of HIV infection and AIDS. Stipends are provided Community Workers but are not enough to cover transportation, materials and supplemental food. EUUC’s contribution would ensure that this vital work in the community will continue.

Neighbors in Need

EUUC will be providing brunch for Neighbors in Need on June 24 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lynnwood.  If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Barb Chessler.

Summer Janitorial help

We are in need of some summer janitorial help for the period when our janitor will be on an extended family leave.  You might volunteer to empty the garbage, recycling and compost, or vacuum a part of the church, sweep Chapman Hall and the kitchen or replace paper products in the restroom.  Let us know if you can help.  Many hands make light work.  Sign up for a chore and week by contacting the office.  We need coverage from June 19 through July 31.

Mark your calendars now for the Pacific Western Region's Assembly - April 27 to 29, 2018

The Pacific Western Region will hold a regional assembly in 2018 on April 27-29 at the DoubleTree Hotel in Portland, Oregon.

This will be our region's second regional assembly. The first was held four years ago in San Jose, California, in April 2013. This regional assembly will take the place of an annual district assembly for each of the four districts, though each of the four districts will likely hold a separate business meeting in Portland.

Host a Summer Potluck

Potlucks to be held mid-July through August

Would you like to host a potluck to welcome newcomers to our congregation anytime from mid-July through August? A summer potluck allows the party to spill out into the garden. Or you might want to host it in a park. Your job will be to provide a main dish, coordinate the food others bring and provide a place to gather. The group will include some seasoned members as well as newcomers. Does anyone want to host a potluck at your home or in a park for families with children? Cyndy Norman will handle sign ups and give you your list of guests. You are guaranteed interesting conversation and fun. Please contact Cyndy if you are interested.

EUUC Garden is starting

Every Monday at 9:00 a.m. at the garden

The EUUC garden is ready for planting!  We welcome anyone who is interested in gardening with us.  From now on until the garden is put to bed for winter, we will be meeting every Monday at 9:00 am.  Bring your gardening tools and gloves and wear your gardening clothes and join us.

Annual UUA General Assembly

The Annual General Assembly for the UUA takes place June 21–25, 2017 in New Orleans. The theme this year is Resist and Rejoice! This is also a Justice General Assembly year and there is a 2 day workshop preceding General Assembly entitled “Undoing Racism” on Tuesday, June 20 and Wednesday, June 21. This is one of the best workshops available on this critical topic and is a good reason to attend General Assembly this year. This year's General Assembly will include the annual Ware Lecture from award-winning author and lawyer, Bryan Stephenson. He is the founder and Executive Director of the Equal Justice Initiative in Montgomery, Alabama and the author of the critically acclaimed New York Times bestseller, Just Mercy.

Social Justice Reading Circle for June:  Bryan Stevenson's "Just Mercy"

This #1 New York Times Bestseller is Stevenson’s story of working as a young lawyer with the poor and wrongly condemned. Reviewer David Cole writes: “Every bit as moving as To Kill a Mockingbird, and in some ways more so . . . a searing indictment of American criminal justice and a stirring testament to the salvation that fighting for the vulnerable sometimes yields.” Discussion: Sunday, June 11, at 12:30 pm, led by Vicki Roberts-Gassler. To register email sjrc.rsvp@euuc.org or signup at the SJ bulletin board. A limited number of copies are available on loan at the Social Justice Desk.

Weekly Family Email

Our Minister for Faith and Justice, the Rev. Cecilia Kingman, sends out a weekly email update about the week's programs and other special announcements. If you have children under 18 and would like to receive this weekly message, send a note to Cecilia and include your children's names and ages, and your name and contact info.

Registration Open for Children and Youth

Registration is now open for Programs for Children and Youth. Please visit our website to register your child or youth, or stop by the office for paper registration. All children ages one to 18 should be registered.
