Bystander Intervention Training

Sunday, July 23 at 11:30 a.m. at University Unitarian Church in Seattle

Join UUC's Immigrant Justice group, in partnership with Washington Initiative (WAI), for Bystander Intervention Training. Considering the likelihood that any of us may observe an incident wherein someone is mistreated, abused or harassed by another, the need for this training may be stronger than ever. Goals for this training include: raising awareness of helping behaviors, increasing one's motivation to help, developing skills and confidence when responding to problems or concerns, and ensuring the safety and well-being of self and others. In lieu of a fee for this training, participants are asked to donate items to support Washington Initiative's programs for the homeless and veterans. Examples of items you might bring include: new, clean socks or other clothing items, and new, unused personal care items. Items for Veterans' Care Packs: journals, playing cards, pocket-size puzzles, and reusable tote bags. There is a similar training set for August 12 at Eastshore UUC in Bellevue from 1 to 3 p.m.

Pacific Northwest UU Young Adult Summer Retreat hosted by EUUC 

Friday, August 11, through Sunday morning, August 13

This year EUUC opens its facilities to the Pacific NW UU Young Adult group for their annual summer retreat.  The premises will be entirely devoted to this group and will not be available to EUUC members or friends. Thank you for sharing your space.  

The SJ Reading Circle for August: J.D. Vance's Hillbilly Elegy

Sunday, August 20 at 11:30 a.m. in Room 5 

Hillbilly Elegy is a #1 New York Times Bestseller. It was named by the Times as one of "6 books to help understand Trump's win." From the book's cover: "Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of poor, white Americans. The disintegration of this group, a process that has been slowly occurring now for over forty years, has been reported with growing frequency and alarm, but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside." New time for early service starting on Ingathering on September 10

Faith Development classes move to the early service time (9 a.m., including the Youth Group) on September 10 (Toddler Care available at both services)

After much discernment and discussion, the Board of Trustees has approved moving the Faith Development Classes, including the Youth Group, to the early service starting with Ingathering Sunday, September 10.  Toddler Care will still be available at both services. In order to ease the strain on the parking lot, and cause less confusion about our start times, the early service will start at 9 a.m. The late service will follow at 11 a.m.  

Arms Around contact for August

Arms Around provides temporary help to members. They can provide dinners while someone recovers from an illness, transport to doctor appointments and more. During the month of August, Marilyn Warner will be the contact person for Arms Around.

Gray and Teal Hymnals 

We are running low on gray and teal hymnals.  If you've taken one home with you, please do return it to the hymnal cart.  

Fall cleanup

We're holding an all-building cleanup on Saturday, September 2, to get our building spiffed up for the coming year.  Vicki Roberts-Gassler and Craig Cyr are in charge.  Please contact them with times that you can help.  The overall time frame is 9:30 - 4:30.  With a great turnout, each person will hopefully only spend a couple of hours of their time here.  

Sunday Offering Committee welcomes nominations

The Sunday Offering committee welcomes nominations from EUUC members who have a favorite tax exempt charity they support or have personal knowledge of. They can be local, national or international. The committee is particularly interested in supporting groups that are not receiving large grant or foundation donations and for whom our contribution can make a difference. Nomination forms can be found online at the EUUC website or in the Sunday Offering mailbox. Completed forms may be put in the mailbox prior to the Sunday Offering’s next meeting, which will be Monday, August 7 in Room 5 at 7:00 p.m. All are welcome.

Seabeck registration is now open

The annual EUUC getaway to Seabeck is scheduled for September 22-24. The theme this year is "Friendship and Fellowship". Seabeck is a weekend of fun, relaxation, friendship and community. Family Friendly Potluck Picnic

Date to be determined, 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Mathay-Ballinger Park, Lake Ballinger

Join other EUUC families for a children friendly potluck evening at Lake Ballinger. This lovely park has playgrounds, BBQ pits, picnic tables and shady spots. A Doodle poll will determine the date. Contact Cyndy Norrman by email to get the link to the Doodle poll.

Mark your calendars now for the Pacific Western Region's Assembly - April 27 to 29, 2018

The Pacific Western Region will hold a regional assembly in 2018 on April 27-29 at the DoubleTree Hotel in Portland, Oregon.

This will be our region's second regional assembly. The first was held four years ago in San Jose, California, in April 2013. This regional assembly will take the place of an annual district assembly for each of the four districts, though each of the four districts will likely hold a separate business meeting in Portland.

Our Minister for Faith and Justice, the Rev. Cecilia Kingman, sends out a weekly email update about the week's programs and other special announcements. If you have children under 18 and would like to receive this weekly message, send a note to Cecilia and include your children's names and ages, and your name and contact info.

Registration Open for Children and Youth

Registration is now open for Programs for Children and Youth. Please visit our website to register your child or youth, or stop by the office for paper registration. All children ages one to 18 should be registered.
