Show your love and solidarity - make a badge this Sunday

Sunday, September 10 between and after services in the Atrium

In response to the Charlottesville VA violence, one of our members made a badge which he has been wearing as much as possible: "I Stand Against Racism." It might not seem like much, but individuals see it, and it ripples outward. He has received positive responses so far, and encourages others to do similarly. Imagine how far the ripples will spread if more of us do this! You can make your own badge, with whatever words express your values, this coming Sunday, in the atrium. Sponsored by the Peace & Justice committee.

Climate Justice Steward Meet-Up

Wednesday, September 13 from 6 to 8 p.m. in Room 1

Would you like to get Washington State to reduce carbon, with a positive social justice impact? Become a Climate Justice Steward! The Alliance for Jobs and Clean Energy is organizing in diverse communities (faith, business, labor, tribes, health care, agriculture, and communities of color) all over Washington to get a carbon tax initiative on the ballot in 2018. Climate Justice Stewards talk to their communities, organize friends, talk to legislators, and are ambassadors for climate justice. In January, 2018 they will help organize signature-gathering. Find out more here, or come to the Meet-Up!

Women's Circle

Thursday, September 14 at 7 p.m. in Room 6

You are invited to join the open women’s circle which meets on the second Thursday of each month. This circle is an opportunity to join with other women in mutual sharing of ourselves around topics that nourish our spirits. It is ongoing and open to both newcomers and longtime members. You are welcome to come and see if this group is right for you. If it is a good fit, please join us as a regular member of the group. For more information please contact Carol Peters or Gail Smith.

Celebrate the Fall Equinox

Friday, September 15 at 7 p.m. in Chapman Hall

The Sun is half-way between the long days of Summer and the long nights of Winter. Days and nights are equal. Join the EUUC Wheel of the Year Pagan Circle in celebrating the Fall Equinox. The celebration combines Wiccan, Shamanic, traditional folklore and Unitarian Universalist traditions. All are welcome. Children are especially welcome. Please bring drums, bells, rattles and sacred items to put on the altar. For more information, contact JoDee Creighton.

The Mask You Live In

Saturday, September 16 at 7 p.m. in Chapman Hall

The Mask You Live In follows boys and young men as they struggle to stay true to themselves while negotiating America's narrow definition of masculinity. Research shows that boys in the U.S. are more likely than girls to be diagnosed with a behavior disorder, prescribed stimulant medications, fall out of school, binge drink, commit a violent crime and/or take their own lives. This film leaves you with lots to think about and discuss. Join us! Invite your friends and family. Come at 6:30 for refreshments and community building.

Inspiring video highlights from 2017 General Assembly

Sunday, September 17 at 12:30 p.m. in Room 5

Join the Racial Justice Work Group for a screening of two deeply inspiring video clips from this year's General Assembly: William Sinkford's sermon from the Service of the Living Tradition, and a presentation by Dr. Mtangulizi Sanyika. Both clips address shortcomings in Unitarian Universalism's history and point toward a new path of multi-cultural inclusion and racial justice seeking. Please bring lunch or a snack to share.

Fall Leadership Gathering

Wednesday, September 20 at 7 p.m. in Room 1

Attention all EUUC Committee Chairs and Board members: Mark your calendars for our annual Fall Leadership Gathering on the evening of Wednesday, September 20. Our theme this year is inclusion. Dessert & coffee follows the meeting. Questions? Contact Nancy Gladow.

For All That Is Our Life: Building Singing Communities of Joyful Resilience - A Workshop with Rev. Jason Shelton

Saturday, September 30 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at EUUC

Music plays a unique role in Unitarian Universalist communities - our songs define us and show us the path to Beloved Community. But they also challenge us at our core and encourage us to engage the hard questions that inevitably come up even in the most Beloved Communities. Come join in a time of reflection and joyful singing with Rev. Jason Shelton, UU minister and composer from Nashville, TN. All are welcome!

Announcements

Connections Reception for Newcomers

There will not be a Connections Reception on the second Sunday, September 10th, due to all the Ingathering Sunday activities. The next Connections Reception for Newcomers will be on October 8th after the second (11:00) service. We invite anyone who wants to know more about membership classes and other activities to talk to the volunteers at the Welcome Desk.

Reading Circles - Popular Titles Return

For those who missed earlier discussions or want to continue the conversation, three titles will be repeated in October. Rachel Maxwell will host a potluck dinner and discussion of Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates at her Edmonds home on October 6. There will be two discussions at EUUC following second service: Bryan Stevenson's Just Mercy led by Ginger Alonzo on October 15 , and Trevor Noah's Born a Crime on October 29 led by Vicki Roberts-Gassler. If you have copies of these books to return or donate, please bring them to the Social Justice Desk. To register or for more information email sjrc.rsvp@euuc.org or call Kyle Gillis.

Hurricane Harvey Recovery Fund

On Friday night, August 25, Hurricane Harvey made landfall as a Category 4 Storm and brought with it deadly winds and rain to an area of the United States millions call home. Much of the Texas Gulf Coast has been impacted and communities in Louisiana and across the state of Texas are still coping with more days of rain. We’re holding all of those affected in our hearts and prayers and we are in touch with local Unitarian Universalists so we can meet the needs as they arise. To do this, the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) has joined with the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC) on a recovery and relief fund. Please give as generously as you are able.

Sunday Offering for September is Mother Nation

If you are looking for ways to fight racism and white supremacy the September Offering gives that opportunity. Mother Nation is devoted to helping Native American women (and families), an underserved group, as many struggle with historical and generational trauma, addiction and homelessness. Using cultural heritage as inspiration, the organization provides a recovery house, mentoring, clinical treatment and housing assistance to help the women become spiritually and financially able to move forward.

Ushers needed for Sunday services

It's not a surprise - we will be having two services starting September 10. This means we need four ushers each Sunday. Would you like to contribute in some way to the workings of the church - but time is an issue? Have you thought of being an usher? The duties are putting out hymnals and collecting and totaling contributions. What you do is very much appreciated and needed.

Register Children Now for Faith Development

Ingathering is fast approaching, so don’t forget to register your kids for our Faith Development program. Registering helps keep Faith Development running smoothly by making sure we have accurate and up to date information on important things like birthdays, allergies, and emergency contacts. You can find the form here.

New time for early service starting on Ingathering on September 10

Faith Development classes move to the early service time (9 a.m.) on September 10 (Toddler Care available at both services)

After much discernment and discussion, the Board of Trustees has approved moving the Faith Development Classes to the early service starting with Ingathering Sunday, September 10.  Toddler Care will still be available at both services. In order to ease the strain on the parking lot, and cause less confusion about our start times, the early service will start at 9 a.m. The late service will follow at 11 a.m. Youth Group meets at 11:00 a.m.

Weekly Family Email

Our Minister for Faith and Justice, the Rev. Cecilia Kingman, sends out a weekly email update about the week's programs and other special announcements. If you have children under 18 and would like to receive this weekly message, send a note to Cecilia and include your children's names and ages, and your name and contact info.

Registration Open for Children and Youth

Registration is now open for Programs for Children and Youth. Please visit our website to register your child or youth, or stop by the office for paper registration. All children ages one to 18 should be registered.
